Another favorite of many of us at TPG is the Chase trifecta – the Chase Sapphire Reserve (or Chase Sapphire Preferred Card), the Inc. Business Preferred Credit Card and the Chase Freedom Unlimited (or Chase Freedom Flex). Used together, owning these three cards offers a powerful combination of earning rates, sign-up bonuses and rewards.
Thanks to Chase’s competitive offerings, we’ve seen American Express step up its game by introducing new cards and adding benefits to existing products.
A few years ago, Amex updated the personal American Express® Gold Card and its commercial counterpart — the American Express® Business Gold Card. These changes make it possible to create the same “Amex trifecta” with three cards that complement each other in almost every way – providing great value with a reasonable price tag.
Each of these cards is great on its own, but they can unlock serious value even for casual travelers when combined. Let’s dig a little deeper.

The Amex Platinum is one of the most valuable cards available, thanks to a welcome bonus and a long list of luxury travel deals that can more than offset its $695 annual fee (see Rates and Fees).

And then of course, you’ll get a $100 statement credit for International Entry or an $85 fee credit for TSA PreCheck every 4 to 4 1/2 years (depending on when you first apply for your card fee is charged). If you can max out all of these credits or mix and match them with your lifestyle, it’s easy to cover the $695 annual fee (see Rates and Fees) from just this statement credit.
I like to think of the “out-of-pocket cost” as a discounted lounge membership, and the Amex Platinum has the most extensive airport lounge benefits of any card. In addition to Priority Pass Select membership, which is available through several other cards, you’ll also get access to Amex-exclusive international Centurion lounges and access to Delta Sky Clubs when flying same-day Delta. The perks don’t stop there. Amex Platinum also earns 5x points (10% cashback subject to TPG values) on flights booked directly with the airline or with Amex Travel (up to $500,000 per year on those purchases) and Pre Pad offers 5x points for hotels. Amex Travel.
Additionally, you can access a helpful premium concierge service for all your travel and dining needs. Hotel stays are also beneficial, whether you take advantage of free Hilton and Marriott Gold Elite status or book through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts to receive property credits and room upgrades. How To Get Business Credit Cards
Adding up to $240 in statement credit makes the Amex Gold Rebirth card very attractive, even with the $250 annual fee (see Rates and Fees).
So how does it work? Amex Gold offers up to $120 in dining credits and up to $120 in Uber Cash for US services per year ($10 monthly credit). Registration is required for best benefits.
The annual dining credit is divided into $10 monthly statement credits that can be used at Grubbob, The Cheesecake Factory, Gold Belly, Wine.com, Shake Bar, and select Shake Shack locations. If you max out this credit, you’ll get $120 a year, reducing your out-of-pocket cost to $130.
Then, you’ll earn $10 a month in Uber Cash which is added directly to your Uber account when you add the card to your Uber account. It can be used for Uber Eats orders or Uber rides in the U.S. Adding that benefit would then result in another $120, meaning you’d theoretically pay just $10 a year for the card.

The total cost comes to $895 for the Amex Trifata annual fee. While annual statement credits can go a long way to offset this, the long-term value of this combo comes from the complementary bonus categories. Let’s take a look.

One key advantage the Amex Trifecta has over its Chase counterpart is that all three cards earn transferable Membership Rewards points.
If you can only get one of these cards, you can choose the perks and bonus category that works best for you without compromising on the redemption aspect. But if you’re able to get all the trifecta, you’ll get anywhere from 4% to 10% back (based on TPG values) on almost all of your purchases.
