The card is mainly aimed at small businesses and the self-employed. The criteria for applying are fairly lenient:
The Plum Card® From American Express Reviews 2023
There are no invoicing or profitability requirements for the company itself. There is no longer a requirement to have been in business for a year; now you can apply as soon as you have a bank account.
Please note that the American Express Business Gold Card is a debit card, not a credit card. You MUST clear your balance in full at the end of each month.
You’ll receive 20,000 American Express Membership Rewards points when you spend £3,000 within three months. This is a very generous incentive.
The card is also free for the first year. The annual fee for subsequent years is £175.

Membership Rewards points can be converted into a number of goodies. The most valuable options are conversion to frequent flyer miles (including Avios and Virgin Flying Club points) at a 1:1 ratio. This means the sign-up bonus is worth 20,000 Avios points or 20,000 Virgin points.
Membership Rewards points are awarded to the individual NOT the company so you can spend them however you want.
American Express states on the Gold Business website that “You will not be eligible for any welcome bonus rewards if you currently have or have had any American Express Platinum, Gold or Green American Express cards registered within the past 13 months.” This includes personal and business cards.
To be clear, you will definitely receive the sign-up bonus if you already have a British Airways American Express, Marriott Bonvoy, Nectar or Platinum Cashback card.
American Express Business Gold Card Review
You’ll receive an extra 10,000 Member Rewards points every time you spend £20,000 in a calendar quarter (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec).
If you spent exactly £20,000 in a quarter, you would have earned 30,000 points in total. This includes 10,000 bonus points and 20,000 base points. 1.5 points per £1 spent is the highest return available for any business credit card.
You’ll get £100 credit a year to spend with Dell. There is no minimum spend, but the credit is split into two parts. You can get £50 back between January and June and £50 back between July and December.
You will receive a consolidated statement showing the spend on your card and all complementary cards. All Membership Rewards points earned on additional cards will be transferred to your personal account.
Amex Amazon Prime Approval
Depending on when you make a payment in your monthly cycle, you’ll receive up to 54 days of free credit on your spending.
American Express statements provide more underlying transaction details for flights and some other transactions than Visa or Mastercard statements, making it easier to reconcile transactions.
Anything from “a little bit” to “a lot” is the answer! This article outlines my take on the most valuable American Express Membership Rewards transfer options.
Your alternative position is to convert points to Avios at 1:1 and then to Nectar points at 1:1.33. With a point of Nectar worth 0.5p. each, that means your American Express points are worth at least 0.66p. of Nectar credit to spend at Sainsbury’s, Argos, eBay.co.uk and other partners. This makes your 20,000 point sign-up bonus worth at least £133.
Amex Business Platinum Card Review
I tend to value air miles between 0.75p. and 1 p. each (this is conservative), so this is your valuation if you transfer to an airline program.
Some of the hotel programs also offer good value for money. Your options are Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and Radisson Rewards.
The only major problem with Amex business cards, including American Express Business Gold, is the lack of acceptance by some providers.
Realistically, you’ll also need to have a Visa or Mastercard to ensure you can always accept a card. For limited companies, I recommend the Capital On Tap Business Rewards Visa credit card. It has a very generous earn rate of 1 Avios per £1
American Express Green Vs. Gold Vs. Platinum
If you are a sole trader, you cannot get the Business Rewards Visa from Capital On Tap. I recommend the generous Barclaycard Select Cashback card:
If you’re a sole trader or run a small business, even a service business, the American Express Business Gold card is worth looking at.
20,000 Membership Rewards points for signing up is a generous incentive, and with no fee for the first year, you have nothing to lose.
If you can put £20,000 per quarter through the card to earn the 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points, you’ll get an exceptionally strong return on your spend.
