Good News: British Airways Will Install Club Suites On All Boeing 777s By The End Of 2022

British Airways launched its long-awaited Club Suite on its new Airbus A350 earlier this year. The seats will be installed on Airbus A350s as new from the factory, but BA now has a long and complicated task of retrofitting these seats (or versions of them) across more than 100 wide-body aircraft.

Only a few aircraft can be taken out of service for repairs at a time, so this process can take years. The first aircraft to receive the overhaul was a 22-year-old Boeing 777-200, one of BA’s oldest aircraft. Its first commercial route was BA173/112 between London Heathrow (LHR) and New York-JFK, and a few days after the overhaul I had the opportunity to try out the new Club Suite on the 777. completely.

We discovered award availability on flight BA112 four days ago, which we identified from the new Club Suites seating chart.

For one-way flights, it’s best to book with British Airways Avios. 50,000 Avios one-way during peak hours and 60,000 on off-peak days. Fees, taxes and carrier surcharges are £504 (or $630) from New York to London. We paid using the American Express Platinum Card, which earns 5x Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on airfare.

The taxes and fees associated with BA award tickets are steep, but considering that round-trip flights regularly sell for $8,000 on this route, that’s a relatively low price. BA is a transfer partner for both American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards, making it easy to collect the points you need to book flights. Additionally, there are often transfer bonuses between one (or both) programs and British Airways, which means you need to earn even fewer points to earn rewards.

British Airways operates approximately ten flights from New York-JFK’s Terminal 7 to various London airports each day, usually in the evening. BA112 has the honor of being the first evening flight (there is also a day flight that departs in the morning).

The advantage of being the first flight of the evening is that it is one of the quietest times in Terminal 7. Arrived two hours before the flight and was relatively surprised to see the World Traveler/World Traveler Plus queue.

Inflight Review: British Airways Boeing 777 200: Club World: London To Bangalore

I was happy to see that the Club World and First Registration sections are separate. It was definitely a premium touch, but the arrow on the sign needed fixing.

There was a long line at the Club World check-in area, and the five booths were moving very slowly. There was no check-in kiosk, so I waited in line. It moved slowly and I could see the Club passengers around me getting upset.

When I finally got to the desk, the check-in agent excitedly shared the news that my flight would be a brand new Club Suite. I smiled knowingly because I had booked this flight on this very day.

With my ticket in hand for my chosen window seat in row 12, I made my way to the advanced security line. I think it was walking past the First/Oneworld Emerald check-in area, which looked much cozier and more efficient than the Club World check-in area!

British Airways 777 Club World: Review

From there, it was a short walk to the premium passport control, where a very upbeat and friendly officer playfully suggested that the couple in front of me register their baby for Global Entry.

Security was fast by US standards, with only CIA agents yelling at anyone who dared to walk through the metal detectors.

The desk agents were busy complaining to each other about their jobs and barely paused to check my boarding pass.

Despite flying TPG regularly between London and New York, I had never been to the BA JFK lounge before. Considering how many flights BA operates each night, I expected the lounge to be fairly large, but was pleasantly surprised by the size.

Review: British Airways New First Class Suite

It had just been refurbished (like the plane I was about to board!) and everything was new, fresh and modern. Some of the furniture, bars and dining areas were very wide apart. This may help at 5:00 PM when the lounge is crowded. It gave the impression that the living room was temporary, and the furniture did not seem to fit the space in which it was placed.

The lounge was busy but not full. I liked the new black bar where I didn’t have to wait to be served. A variety of self-serve wines were offered.

I also loved the special Brewdog bar where you can pour several different beers. I usually don’t like in-lounge promotions and partnerships because it can cheapen the premium experience, but when done as well as the Brewdog bar, they’re great features. Several passengers were excited to sample a variety of craft beers straight from the taps.

The living room was so large that I could not decide where to sit even if I walked around it. With seating for hundreds of people in the living room, there didn’t seem to be much actual food served, just homemade salad, cheese, and crackers.

British Airways 777 First Class Overview

I noticed a separate area called The Brasserie, guarded by a staff member, and vaguely remembered something about Club World’s pre-flight meal. There was no indication of who was in or out of the area and I was not advised of this at check-in or at the entrance to the lounge.

Feeling a bit silly, I approached the gatekeeper and asked, “Can I come in here?” He saw my boarding pass and accepted me inside. BA should advise business class passengers about access to this area rather than expect them to figure it out for themselves.

There were plenty of hot food options as well as a small made-to-order a la carte menu. The drinks were the same as the main part of the lounge.

There are cafeteria tables around the room, and the wide space recreates the feeling of a temporary space, the furniture ordered from another space. The dining area was not crowded and the staff here were welcoming, friendly and very helpful.

Although passengers had to collect the first drink themselves, lounge staff offered and brought refills. A couple of tables away from me was a young parent and their baby in the advanced security line, as were the staff. great with kids.

If you have a Club World ticket from Terminal 7, check in at The Brasserie. It’s such an amazing space, and I was sorry I had so little time to make the first bachelorette flight of the evening. If my flight leaves in the evening, I’ll happily lounge there for hours.

I left the lounge and walked to gate 6 where my flight departed. Terminal 7 was bright and quite busy this evening.

Arriving at the gate five minutes before the scheduled time, I was alarmed to see groups 4 and 5 being called to board the plane. I assume this means most of the plane is boarded up, which makes it difficult to get a photo of the cockpit.

British Airways Business Class: Los Angeles To London

I raced to the Group 2 seating line (with a Group 2 boarding pass) and the gate agent explained that due to the narrow aisles of the business class cabin on this plane, they were seated further back as “World Traveler” passengers. Past Club World will not be able to squeeze passengers. Although it made sense, it wasn’t broadcast over the P.A. The system penetrated the gate area, resulting in many Club World passengers appearing to be in the final stages of boarding.
