I travel on Amtrak every few months, and I’m more productive on the train than in any coworking space. Here’s how I optimized the move.

I’ve worked in many different offices over the years — a “hot-desk” coworking space, a cubicle farm, an open-plan newsroom and even a corner office with a view.

But America’s best office for productivity, I’m convinced, isn’t an office at all — it’s a seat on an Amtrak train.

Every few months I take Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian train to travel between New York City, my current home, and my hometown near Pittsburgh.

On each trip, I certainly look forward to seeing family and friends, but I also look forward to the nine hours of work I can count on during the journey.

As a freelance journalist I can write anywhere. But working from home with a pet and a partner often means interrupting and jockeying for quiet in our tiny Manhattan apartment.

This mobile, temporary office offers the ambient sounds and bustling people you see while working in a coffee shop — the epitome of focus for me.

On two trips this summer, for example, I plowed through my to-do list, pitched articles, sorted through hundreds of emails, created a PowerPoint for an upcoming speaking event, edited an 8,000-word story, and worked on it. If I had worked from home, or any other office, for that matter, I probably wouldn’t have completed as many articles.

In addition to the deep focus I get on the train, there’s WiFi, an outlet at every seat, and easy access to a bathroom that’s tidier than many coffee-shop restrooms.

Amtrak travels to more than 500 destinations in 46 states and promises “the best views North America has to offer,” a claim I have to agree with.

My regular route clocks in at the length of a typical workday, but there are longer or shorter journeys to choose from.

With Amtrak, I avoid the struggle through airports and transfers. I can sit and work in peace for my entire journey and still reach my destination.

Instead of taking time out of my work day to travel, I do more work on travel days.

In addition to its role as an efficient workplace, Amtrak is a more energy-efficient option than traveling by car or plane. According to Amtrak’s website, Amtrak is 46% more energy-efficient than car travel and 34% more energy-efficient than domestic air travel.

Tips For Traveling Amtrak’s Southwest Chief

I can feel confident that I’m more environmentally conscious on my travels than if I were traveling on all these celebrities’ private jets.

Business-class seats are available on various routes. They are a bit more expensive, but they are worth it. Business class offers extra leg room, more spacious seats and free soft drinks. This is crucial to my ideal Amtrak setup.

By comparison, airfare between New York City and Pittsburgh runs about $220 on most airlines — except for a few cheap Spirit flights. A one-way standard rental car costs about $120, and that’s before gas and tolls.

A companion day pass to New York City costs about $35 per day, so my train trip is obviously more, but it takes me 373 miles west.

When you buy your ticket, the Amtrak website will show in real time how full the train will be. I have seen trains from 40% full to 80% full depending on the day.

Like being able to see how busy a coffee shop or co-working space is before you get there.

I prefer a less full train so I’m more likely to have a full row to stretch out with my backpack, sweater, laptop and snacks.

Booking and marking this space means I can relax and focus on my work all day.

Many Amtrak trains offer WiFi, and it usually connects well for me. But I travel in parts of central Pennsylvania that are very rural, so the signal can be spotty in some areas.

It forces me to organize my work in batches and impose deadlines. I focus on internet-intensive work between New York City and Philadelphia, where I can expect fast WiFi, then save offline work for the later part of the journey.

Whenever I feel the need to take a short break, I don’t even get up from my seat. I just turn to the window and marvel at the scenery rolling by, hear the click-clicking rails and train whistles.

I immediately feel transported away from my work and appreciate the natural beauty of the outdoors. When I get back to my laptop, I’m refreshed and ready to plow.

There’s something magical about arriving at a destination to see and explore the country by rail—perhaps even more magical than checking off items on your to-do list. Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren, with NYCAviation.com, recently took the Amtrak train from Portland to Seattle and wrote a review to compare the experience to a flight. Here is his review in his own words:

Coming off a recent experience with Superliner cars on a trip from Vancouver BC to Seattle, we have to admit expectations were high. To refresh, coach class seating on the trip had plenty of legroom, generous recline, and almost full windows for an exceptionally low price. When boarding in Vancouver we first wondered if we had mistakenly boarded a business class car and were pleasantly surprised to discover that we did not. If coach class is so impressive, we thought business class must be closer to the palace.

So you can imagine our surprise when we checked into the car exclusively for business class with priority boarding benefits and discovered that the legroom we expected to be an ocean of freedom turned out to be the equivalent of your average 737 exit row.

But alas, we discovered we were set up. See, obviously the BC cars were an aberration. Normally using the route we were now looking at Talgo IV Articulated Tilted but on the day we traveled from BC we had a normal car option; Double-decked superliners, commonly used on long-haul routes such as the Southwest Chief from Chicago to LA. Since the Superliner is built for long day-end trans-cons, coach class is designed so that one can comfortably call that seat home for a long time. The Talgo car we were in, again the normal cars on this route were built for high-speed. Train sets can travel up to 110mph but are limited to 79mph by safety restrictions.

First Look At Amtrak’s New Acela Business And First Class

Still, first impressions can be deceiving and we settled on seat 7C in the 2-1 configured cabin. Fresh off an assignment that ended just an hour ago, we set up for work just in time for the train to leave Portland’s Union Station. The huge laptop came out immediately. A food tray is easily removed and sets itself at a comfortable distance, large enough to handle the behemoth computer. Between the wide seat width and the aisle seating, we didn’t feel cramped: there was enough room to shove our laptop, iPad, camera and papers without too much fuss.

Thanks to running some high-powered photo editing software, it was in desperate need of some juice. No worries though, because there’s a plug at our feet along the floor.

Finally, we desperately needed to catch up on some email and otherwise use the world wide web. Although Amtrak’s free WiFi service is notorious for being pretty bad and visually awful, the service runs largely without issue the entire trip. After a few hiccups through the tunnel and again when trying to attach several large files the service stopped or slowed down altogether.

The combination of spatial comfort, constant power, and consistent connectivity make working on board a real breeze.
