Over the last three years, consumers have increasingly relied on credit to fund new car purchases, with nearly nine in 10 personal vehicles purchased this way during 2016, according to the Finance & Leasing Association. The advent of private contract buying (PCP), which allows you to buy, say, a new Ford Fiesta for as little as £150 a month and a small deposit, is largely behind the boom in UK car sales. But with many three-year PCP deals due to expire in 2017, it might be a good time to take up the ex-financier’s offer.

Under most PCP schemes, the driver makes monthly payments over three years before being presented with three options: make a “balloon” payment and take legal ownership of the car; exchange and use any equity as deposit for another new car; or return the car to the dealer. If traded or returned, dealers usually approve those in the best condition for resale. The remainder is sold through auctioneers, such as British Car Auctions (BCA), to used dealers or private buyers (see box below), opening the door for bargain hunters.
Buying an approved used car from a manufacturer’s franchised dealer is the easiest and safest way to buy used goods. If the car is between two and a half to three years old, it is most likely used PCP, which means it should be well maintained and not driven into the ground. This is because many PCP agreements charge excess mileage fees and require the car to be maintained according to the manufacturer’s service schedule. However, buying this way is also likely the most expensive way to get your ex PCP’s offer.
You should also heed this advice from auto expert Rupert Pontin: “Buying any vehicle requires a thorough national research these days to find the most competitive price. Always check the origins of the vehicle thoroughly and make sure it has been fully inspected and serviced, although any dealer selling cars at this age should do these things as a matter of course. Remember to factor in travel costs as well, as a car that is £100 cheaper but 150 miles away may not be worth the travel time and hassle of going and looking at it, buying it, then coming back to pick it up.
Of course, buying from a manufacturer’s own dealer tends to cost more than buying at auction. But this method is not recommended for beginners: there is little time to assess the vehicle because you won’t be able to sit in it, let alone take it on a test drive. In addition, you will find it very difficult to ensure that the car being sold at auction is actually a used PCP. However, if so, it should have a full service history and be around three years old.

If you’re buying at an auction, bring someone who knows cars. Find out what car prices, models, and years should be by consulting a used car value guide, such as Glass’s or Black Book from Cap HPI. Meanwhile, a BCA spokesperson told us: “Very good cars, well maintained and with low mileage, often fetch more than guide prices.”
