Which makes the ability to conduct both research and practice ideal. Among all graduate programs, clinical doctoral programs are one of the most difficult to get into; Acceptance rates are lower than law school, medical school, or other research-based graduate programs (eg, 8 out of 300 applicants are accepted).

Clinical PhD programs are usually funded for graduate students, however, making this route less financially burdensome.

Developed in the 1970s as an alternative to the traditional PhD, the PsyD is a professional doctoral degree that is more clinically oriented. PsyD holders can work as practicing clinicians; access to educational opportunities is more limited than those with Ph.D. A PsyD is usually earned in 4-6 years (plus one year of internship), similar to a PhD, but the research component of the program is greatly reduced (most graduate training occurs in a clinical setting). PsyD programs are easier to get accepted to, but also more expensive.

Usually completed in two years, a master’s program can be a faster way to earn a graduate degree and enter the workforce. Acceptance rates are higher than doctoral programs, although annual program costs may be higher. There are a number of master’s programs that clinical psychologists want to have, from clinical to social work – and many give the holder the ability to work in private practice or in a corporate/organizational setting.

However, although clinical experience is not necessarily required, gaining such experience can be valuable in determining whether a clinical path is truly your career choice. It’s also unlikely to hurt your application and, given the competitiveness of many clinical programs, can actually help your application stand out.
