Doctoral Degree In Counseling Psychology – Our doctoral (PhD) program in counseling psychology is APA accredited. Our program follows the Boulder model for preparing practitioner-scientists, with an emphasis on social justice issues.
The program requires full-time study (9-12 credits per fall/spring semester) and residency in Lexington. Like all doctoral programs in counseling psychology, our program includes the completion of a dissertation and a one-year full-time internship at an APA-accredited location, which often requires relocation to another state. As is typical for doctoral programs in counseling psychology, our program takes most postmaster’s students (who enter the program with a master’s in applied mental health) five years to complete and most premaster’s students seven. years to complete.

Most graduates of our program (click here to meet our alumni) find employment in mental health agencies (e.g., medical centers, community agencies, group practices), university counseling centers, or federal facilities (e.g., VA’s, prisons). Some graduates go into private practice. Other graduates hold research or teaching positions at higher-level institutions. The first working environment is usually closely related to the type of specialized experience gained in the student’s pre-doctoral internship year at APPIC. Many graduates were able to move up to director/manager levels in these health systems within three to seven years of graduation. We seek to train counseling psychologists who are competent health service psychologists (HSPs) who facilitate optimal well-being and the transformation of unhealthy and oppressive social structures through engagement with science and practice.

We use a competency-based training approach. Our students have completed clinical practice in a variety of settings in and around Lexington, including university counseling centers, community mental health agencies, private practices, evaluation clinics, mental hospitals, Veterans Health Administration (VA’s) medical centers, correctional facilities, and clinical mental health specialties.

Generally, students entering the doctoral program have completed master’s degrees in psychology or counseling. We may accept strong applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree in psychology or a related discipline (eg sociology, pre-med) but do not hold a master’s degree; These students are expected to complete our master’s level coursework and practice before beginning doctoral coursework and practice. Students negotiate a specific program of study with their advisory committee. Students can generally waive doctoral courses when they have completed an equivalent course during their master’s program.
Drs. Hargons, Hammer, Rostosky, and Stevens-Watkins will be PhD students beginning Fall 2023. GRE scores are optional (unless candidate wants to work with Dr. Stevens-Watkins, in which case reporting of GRE scores is required). GRE scores). There is no minimum GRE or cut score requirement.

Applications for admission are evaluated by program faculty, who carefully review (a) the applicant’s GPA; (b) GRE scores, where provided; (c) letters of recommendation addressing academic, research and counseling experience and interpersonal skills; (d) match faculty research interests; (e) Purpose statement outlining professional goals (ie, it is consistent with our training model and values of social justice and demonstrates excellence in written communication); (f) writing sample demonstrating excellence in written communication; and (g) contribution to diversity, broadly defined to include individual social identities and backgrounds. Program faculty holistically consider a potential student’s entire application and make decisions based not only on numerical criteria, but also on perceived fit with the program’s goals, needs, and values. Therefore, a low score in one area may be offset by professional strengths in another area. The minimum GPA is >2.75 for undergraduate and >3.00 for graduate. The minimum TOEFL score is 79. It is crucial that students articulate in their Statement of Purpose how their specific research interests match the research program of one or two of the counseling psychology faculty members.
This interview process helps program faculty and prospective students better assess the suitability of the intended faculty advisor and program. After the day of the interview, the program’s faculty meets to review, discuss, and make final decisions on offers of admission.
