Over the past quarter century, Earth’s oceans have retained 60 percent more heat each year than scientists previously thought, said Laure Resplandi, a geologist at Princeton University who led the startling study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The difference represents an enormous amount of excess energy, originating from the Sun and trapped by the Earth’s atmosphere – an annual sum representing eight times the world’s annual energy consumption. In line with this goal, the new LIFE 360 strategy will guide the group’s environmental initiatives over the next 10 years, strengthening the existing alliance between nature and creativity. Protecting water, soil and air quality is a key focus for the group and one of the most tangible objectives set by Maisons. All these initiatives foster innovation across our value chains, from field to shop and beyond.
Maisons are determined to minimize water consumption at every stage of the value chain and ensure discharges are free from pollution. To ensure a neutral impact on resources, they have nothing less than excellence.
Several of our maisons and their suppliers in the readymade garments, leather goods and footwear segment are members of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) programme, which promotes responsible handling of chemicals and deployment of good wastewater treatment technologies. Relevant sites (tanneries, textile workshops, etc.) analyze their discharges and are regularly audited. The same applies to Maisons’ strategic suppliers, which include the top 30 suppliers per Maison by 2023.

Another example of a water stewardship initiative can be found at the historic distillery of Glenmorangie on the Scottish coast, which since 2017 has been equipped with a wastewater treatment plant based on anaerobic digestion. The plant produces biogas that is used directly by the site, reducing its fossil fuel energy needs by 13% and removing 95% of the organic matter in its emissions.
To address marine pollution, particularly from plastics, and its maisons are committed to handling these materials responsibly and have pledged to eliminate virgin plastics derived from fossil fuels from their packaging by 2026. The “Creative Circle” pillar of the LIFE 360 program is driving innovation in this. area, through the use of recycled or alternative materials. At Sephora, bio-based plastics are already widely used for the packaging of some products.
Preserving soil health enables us to ensure the quality of the raw materials used by our Maisons, as well as their ability to store carbon dioxide and participate in the natural water and nitrogen cycles. It intends to increase the deployment of regenerative agriculture by 2030 to cover all strategic supplies, including grapes, cotton and wool.
Moët Hennessy, for example, is committed to preserving soil quality through its “Living Souls, Living Together” program. For many years, all its maisons have followed the most sought-after environmental certifications in France, such as High Environmental Value (HVE) and Sustainable Viticulture (VDC) in the Champagne region and Cognac Eco-Certification (CEC) in Cognac. All Champagne houses had stopped using herbicides in their vineyards in the Champagne region by the end of 2020. And Hennessy will adopt the same approach for its own vineyards in 2021 and for its grape suppliers in 2028.

In 2021, Ruinart and Hennessy both implemented pilot biodiversity projects with the non-profit organization Reforest Action. Projects include the use of agroforestry techniques, such as the planting of hedges, trees and shrubs and the creation of biodiversity “islands”, at the historic vineyard of Ruinart in Tyssy and at Domaine de la Bataille in Hennessy. Hennessy has taken its commitment even further by launching an ambitious global forest regeneration programme.

Efforts by various maisons have already reduced energy consumption in retail space by more than 30% per square meter.
