Personal Goodwill Hunting

Myth: Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio turns away a person with a disability from our stores.

Mark Wafer owns six Tim Hortons stores in Scarborough and employs 250 people, 46 of whom have disabilities. Wafer is motivated to promote inclusive work not only in its franchises but beyond by encouraging other businesses to do the same.

Mark Wafer knows what it’s like to qualify for a job but be turned down because of a disability.

Toronto franchise owner Tim Hortons has reached out to former Goodwill employees after 16 stores and 10 donation centers in Ontario abruptly closed a week ago, leaving 430 workers out of a job.

Wafer owns six Tim Hortons restaurants in Scarborough, where he has been hiring people with disabilities since 1995 and his social media offering has expanded to both disabled and non-disabled employees.

“We have had 126 people with disabilities in the last 20 years, all in meaningful and competitively paid positions,” Wafer said via email. “It ranges from entry level to management and across all disability types, from developmentally challenged to deaf, blind, physical, mental health and episodic conditions, such as MS.”

So far, four people have contacted Wafer at [email protected] and two have made appointments for job interviews this week.

No stranger to disability, Wafer is deaf, having been born with 20 percent hearing ability. Unable to hold down a job as a youth, he became a successful businessman and an advocate for the disabled by hiring people with disabilities.

“The reason I reached out to these former (Goodwill) employees is because I know a lot of them have disabilities,” Wafer said. “The unemployment rate for people with disabilities in Canada is currently sad at about 70 percent. The participation rate is only about 18 percent.

“So those let go by Goodwill face a daunting job search and success is unlikely. We have a proven track record of inclusion and want to make sure employees know we’re ready to hire them, if they have the skills and/or can be trained to do the job,” he added.

“Mark speaks the language and talks about how much his business has improved, how absenteeism is gone and everything is better,” said City of Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley. “When you hear that from an entrepreneur, it’s very powerful.”

In 2010 Bradley issued a challenge to mayors across Ontario to hire people with disabilities for municipal jobs. “It used to be seen as done out of mercy or charity, and it wasn’t; it’s social justice and smart business to do the right thing,” he said.

“We accommodate everyone in the workplace one way or another, whether it’s flex hours or allergies. But when you say this about disabled people it seems like you’re doing them a favor.

“The benefits are many and I’m pointing to people like Mark and David Onley (Ontario’s 28th Lieutenant Governor) to pay attention to the issue,” he said.

Bradley, along with Wafer, Onley and Joe Dale, director of the Ontario Disability Employment Network, worked with the disabled advocacy group Community Living and others to spread the challenge to mayors and businesses.

The mayor of Sarnia said there are many cities and towns across the province that have taken his Mayor’s Challenge, but so far Toronto has not been one of them. Bradley said he was told in December that a meeting would be scheduled with Toronto Mayor John Tory this January, but he was informed it would not happen and was referred to a city councillor.

“No disrespect to the councilman but the Mayor’s Challenge is the mayor leading the community and creating the culture,” Bradley said.

Spring Cleaning? Here’s What Goodwill Actually Wants You To Donate

“A lot of this has to do with private sector companies still buying into a series of myths and misconceptions about hiring people with disabilities,” Wafer said. “That they work more slowly, get sick more often, need more supervision or expensive accommodations, and may be less safe to work.
