Franklin 1¢ stamps are among the most common of all United States stamps issued from 1922 to 1938. To the novice, they appear equally rare, but experienced stamp collectors can tell the difference.

Scott’s Specialized Catalog of United States Stamps and Covers lists 16 different stamps that share the same design as the A155 engraving. This sum includes sheets, booklets and stamps in rolls; overprinted varieties; flat plate and rotary printing; stamps with different perforation rates; and a nonsensical matter.
All of these stamps are illustrated here, but for the true expert, they are just the beginning. You can continue to collect color shades, gum types, double transfers and other types of plates, plate numbers and other marginal markings, vending and fixing machine perforations, errors, oddities, oddities, cancellations, postal uses and other interesting features.
These are common 1¢ Franklin duplicates: Scott 552 was struck from flat plates. It has 11 gauge perforations in both dimensions, but its printed design is smaller than either of the rares. It is narrower than the Scott 594 and shorter than the Scott 596, although all three brands have the same perforations.
Another way to identify a flat stamp is to look at the back. It usually has dots of green ink called offsets that are transferred when the printed sheets have been stacked on top of each other to dry. The rotogravure stamps were dried by passing the printed web through a heated chamber before being rolled so that they only have a sparse layout on the reverse side.

For collectors who know how to use a perforation gauge correctly and measure carefully, it is not difficult to identify common rotary printing stamps that have this design. The Scott 578 has 11 x 10 holes; Scott 581, 10 gauge; and Scott 632, measuring 11 x 10½. But careless measurements can lead to misidentification, so always be precise when the stakes are so high.
All of the 1922 series reel stamps were printed on small rotogravure presses invented a decade earlier by Benjamin R. Stickney. Horizontal format rolls were printed from curved plates with 170 objects, 10 objects across the plate and 17 subjects in the rotational dimension. The curvature of the plates stretched the engraved images in the horizontal dimension, so that the printed images were wider than pole stamps and booklets printed from flat plates.
The two plates were printed in tandem so that, when placed together on the press, they formed a cylindrical surface with 34 objects on the perimeter, with an ink line printed in the space where the plates adjoined. Collectors refer to two stamps that span a common line as “Line Pairs,” which are premium items. The 1¢ Franklin horizontal coils are listed as Scott 597.
The catalog advises users that the Scott 594 model measures approximately 19¾ by 21¼ millimeters and the Scott 596 measures approximately 19¼ by 22½ mm. Unfortunately, inexperienced collectors have rarely been trained to make reliably accurate measurements and often read rulers optimistically. The result is always disappointment. All too often the plain Scott 552 is misidentified as a 594 or 596; many are reluctant to believe experts who advise them of their mistakes.

In my opinion, a better method is to understand how these different stamps were made and why they are different. With this knowledge, positive identification becomes an exercise in applying these lessons to the study of each stamp.
Vertical format rolls were printed from plates of the same size with 150 subjects, but with dimensions in the orthogonal layout, 10 subjects across the plate and 15 subjects in the rotational dimension, so that when paired these plates had a cylindrical volume of 30 subjects with a total rows at intervals of 15 items.
The curvature of these plates stretched the engraved images in vertical dimension, so that the printed images are taller than stamp impressions from flat plates and narrower than stamps in a horizontal format roll. Franklin 1¢ vertical coils are listed as Scott 604.
In the years that the Scott 597 and 604 rolls were produced, both formats were perforated 10-diameter between items in one dimension along the printed tape and finished on Stickney winders that cut each row apart and rolled it, with attached guides and end strips. to the inner and outer ends of the stamp strips.
