The Public Health Office of the National Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Surveillance System (NASS) is a federally funded initiative to estimate and monitor the number of individuals with ASD. In the initial phase of the program, we estimate this number among children and adolescents. Findings in the 2015 NASS report focused on 5-17-year-olds from six provinces and one territory: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, British Columbia, and the Yukon.
Is It Autism?
The Public Health Agency of (PHAC) recognizes efforts being made nationwide to support people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Much of this support comes from the health, education and social services sectors, which are the responsibility of local and territorial governments.
An essential aspect of supporting these front-line efforts is developing an understanding of the size and characteristics of individuals with ASD across regions and time. There are existing repositories of ASD data nationally, but no comprehensive and comparable country-level data.
In response, PHAC established the National ASD Surveillance System (NASS), initially focusing on the child and adolescent population.
NASS is a collaboration of federal, provincial and territorial governments. NASS will provide evidence to help inform important initiatives in programs, services and research that affect Canadians living with ASD, their families and caregivers.
Autism Symptoms: What Does Asd Look Like In Adults?
ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that involves impairment of language, communication skills, and social interaction coupled with restricted and repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities. Footnote 1 Signs of ASD are usually discovered in infancy, and boys are diagnosed with ASD four to five times more often. ASD over girls. Footnote 2
Each person with ASD is unique and has different symptoms, defects, and abilities. Because of the range of characteristics, this condition is termed a “spectral” disorder, in which the need for support can range from no need at all to very great, as the individual’s abilities and deficiencies can fall anywhere on the spectrum. This is a complex lifelong condition that affects not only people with ASD, but their families, caregivers, and communities.
A diagnosis of ASD is usually given by a doctor or psychologist. ASD diagnostic assessments typically use both direct observation and developmental interviews to inform the diagnostic clinician’s clinical judgment based on the criteria for ASD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Footnote 3
It is common for individuals living with ASD to have one or more comorbid conditions. A comorbid condition is a disease or condition that exists alongside the underlying condition. Besides other developmental disorders (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, speech disorders, intellectual disabilities, and sensory integration disorders), other comorbidities associated with ASD may include mental, neurological, gastrointestinal, and sleep disorders. These are often diagnosed with, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, seizures or epilepsy, insomnia, and gastrointestinal problems. Heritability Of Autism
Public health surveillance is defined as tracking and predicting any health event or determinant of health through continuous data collection. their integration, analysis and interpretation; Communicating results for public information, policy and decision making.
Surveillance is a key function of public health and PHAC. It is considered an essential component of any public health strategy.
Recognizing a shared responsibility with provinces and territories (PTs) on public health issues, PHAC works to build an effective public health system that enables Canadians to achieve better health and well-being. In this capacity, PHAC has a unique role in leading and coordinating national public health initiatives.
NASS, led and coordinated by PHAC, tracks the incidence and demographics of children and adolescents with ASD. This includes estimates of prevalence, incidence and key characteristics, patterns and trends over time and across geographic areas. NASS collects, analyzes and reports ASD data from multiple sectors such as health, education and social services.

The 2008 federal budget committed to establishing a surveillance system for developmental disabilities as part of the federal action plan to protect human health from environmental contaminants. The initial focus was on surveillance of ASD in children and adolescents (ie developing NASS).
Following the initial stages of initiating State and Territory (PT) consulting and hiring key staff to initiate NASS development plans, PHAC established the ASD-Advisory Committee (ASD-AC) in 2011 to capture data on ASD. We advised you on the most effective approach. across . Members of this committee include national experts in surveillance, epidemiology, psychology, medicine, education and knowledge translation. Representative of a national stakeholder organization representing individuals and families living with ASD.
Environmental scans were conducted by PHAC within all PTs from 2011 to 2013. ASD data holders and data sources were identified with the help of the Pan-Canadian Public Health Network’s Healthy People and Communities Steering Committee. In 2007, before NASS development began, PHAC coordinated technical workshops with clinicians and researchers to determine surveillance needs and data options for the national system. A list of priority data points for tracking ASD has been developed. This list provided the basis for the data points found by the scan. A total of 47 data sources were investigated to evaluate the corresponding case definitions and data elements potentially available for use by NASS.
Environmental scanning was one of the key consultations that informed the development of NASS, including: NASS ASD Surveillance Case Definition; Data elements to look for NASS Data Dictionary (i.e. Common Reference Guide for Data Collection) and other national infrastructure components. Environmental scans have also been instrumental in initiating partnerships with PT data holders. and when validating that the education, health and social services sectors will be key data sources for NASS development.
Early Detection For Autism Spectrum Disorder In Young Children
From 2012 to 2013, PHAC plans to implement NASS, including a collaborative, phased, multi-sector PT engagement strategy for approval by the Public Health Network and the Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health. was planned, developed and presented. This provided momentum.
