I spoke with two people who could take you from aspiring model to full-blown runway star: world-famous Wilhelmina’s female agent Nicholas Butts and Storm Management’s agent Olly Innes. These powerhouses know everything there is to know about getting started, booking gigs, and the secret to a long and successful career. In fact, Innes says, this is actually how most models are discovered. Model Scouts travel the world to find young people with potential in malls, concerts, airports and even schools. And now, thanks to social media, I’m scouting lots of models on Instagram. So even if you can’t control whether someone spots you on the street, you can post a picture of the fire on Insta.
If you haven’t been scouted yet but still want to work as a model, you should find an agency to represent you before booking your own photo shoot or runway show. Butts explains, “The agent will do all the work of picking out the right images for the book that the customer will respond to.” Agencies are always looking for new talent, so get in touch or submit yourself for consideration.
Before doing anything, you should look at potential agencies and make sure they are legit. Butts says to check out models.com, known for its modeling bible. They have a list of approved agencies in each market, so you can be sure that you are working with the best of the best.

You pay someone to take a picture of your face to show to an agency. These professional photos usually cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and the agency most likely won’t use them in your portfolio. That said, they are a total waste of money. No messy hair, heavy makeup, or outlandish clothes. Show off your silhouette with a simple hairdo, some light moisturizer, and a form-fitting outfit. “I sometimes recommend a concealer for a little breakout,” admits Butts.
When Innes reviews submissions from aspiring models, she doesn’t look for anything in particular. The same goes for classically beautiful people. He says you have to have a good look to stand out or be interesting and he will take notice.

We are all familiar with the stereotype of size zero models as baby giraffes who are no older than 18 years old. There’s still a huge market for tall, skinny girls, but Innes and Butts are happy to report. The industry is changing to be more inclusive of size, age and gender. “I would say that was not the case 10 years ago,” Butts said. “You’d see a 14-year-old walk the runway with an underdeveloped butt. And now that’s a different story, with many clients not even booking a model until she’s 18. I think that’s a model’s lifespan. I’ve seen it definitely help prolong my job.”
Forget the “don’t feed the models” joke. Butts is extremely conscious of helping models maintain the healthiest weight for them. “If you have a girl who is a size 6 and she doesn’t want to be a size 2, that’s ok! I’m going to promote her as a size 6 and make sure she stays a size 6 because she could probably drop to a 2 but that’s This is where you run into this eating problem,” warns Butts.
You may have your heart set on making it big in New York, LA, or even Paris, but according to Butts, you often can’t choose a city. The city chooses. Butts managed models who wanted to work in NYC but couldn’t get a single gig, but they booked jobs every day in Chicago. Be prepared to go where the job (and cash) is!
If you’re suffering from what Butts calls “pretty girl syndrome” (well, non-existent or worse, deserving personality), you’re going to have a hard time booking a job. am. Being friendly to your entire crew will go a long way and make your clients remember you as someone they want to work with again.

You are constantly maintaining your hair, nails and skin. Don’t be afraid to seek professional help. Working with a dermatologist or fitness trainer can go a long way. “It’s just one part of the job,” Innes advises, “just like being a doctor or a lawyer requires studying and qualifying.”
If you love what you do, it won’t technically feel like work. When you’re just starting out in the industry, you have to attend every meeting, take advantage of every opportunity, and always remember that for every job you want to do, there are hundreds of other people wanting to do it too. There’s no time to be idle. “It’s difficult at first, but when it clicks, it’s like a domino effect,” explains Butts.
Private jets may not be in your future, but a lot of travel, living in hotel rooms and working long hours certainly will. Butts says commercial shoots tend to be somewhat more regular than a Monday-Friday 9-5 schedule, but if you want to hit the runway, you basically have to be ready to work 24/7. Some jobs can last for several days, and can even end in a 12-hour shoot. The schedule can change completely from one show to the next.
