Maryland parents said Monday that they have decided to homeschool their children amid concerns about curriculum and COVID-19 policies as schools cut teacher quotas to combat shortages.

Homeschooling In Maryland Under A “church Umbrella”
“I feel like we need to give our kids an environment where they don’t have to wear masks all day to wear,” Michelle told co-host Carly Shimkus. “We had the freedom to choose which curriculum they would use. We were able to fill the gap that they lost during the COVID pandemic, but it really hurt the kids.”
“I was able to patch them up in their math and English because I was able to drill directly into what my kids needed,” she continued. “And I know that right now it’s not really an option for everyone, so we’re still trying to fight for families who feel like they don’t have a voice.”
The Kirwan Plan provided $4 billion to Maryland public schools, but critics say the system has resorted to hiring thousands of uncertified teachers.

“My wife and I just saw the decline of the school system, and it wasn’t even just the public school system, it was the private school system, which was even more terrifying,” George says. “It was packed into it. So we just made the decision to pull the kids and quit his job and just rely on our small business as our only source of income to survive, and we made it work.”
Amid concerns about underqualified teachers, they also shared concerns about Prince George’s County Schools’ renewed mask mandate.
The couple said they worry that speaking out publicly could affect their business, but despite their concerns, they remain committed to speaking out.

“We just kind of prayed over it and we kind of looked at each other and talked about it and we said we’re not doing this for our kids,” George said. “Our children are out of the school system. Why? Once you are physically present in a state, even temporarily, you are subject to the laws of that state, and often to the jurisdiction of its courts. So you may be required to comply with that state’s home school law. This is true even if your legal domicile is in another state and you are only temporarily living elsewhere (for example, if you are an active duty member of the military on temporary assignment).
Will you live in another state for more than a month while public schools in that state are in session? generally recommends following that state’s homeschool requirements. This general recommendation applies even if you and/or your spouse pay taxes, own property, and/or work in another state.

Yes! And it can be a great option. Whether your child is physically or mentally disabled or has a specific learning disability or learning disability, homeschooling may be the best option to help him or her improve academically.
