After years of being bombarded with water, cleaning agents and scrubbing, your grout probably has everything it needs. Adding a shower or bathtub surround is actually quite difficult. All old grout and caulk must be removed before new grout and caulk can be replaced. We often find work that is not properly prepared and new grout fails. New grout should not be floated or rubbed over old grout, it will simply peel off in no time. However, we see this all the time, especially in today’s real estate market. Skim coatings are common in properties for sale. Most sandless grouts found today have polymers in the grout and do not require a sealer. However, I recommend avoiding gritty grout, commonly found on floors.
