It explores the empirical puzzle of how inter-structural relations between organizations that rely on distinct and potentially conflicting institutional logics can be maintained under conditions of power asymmetry. This study analyzes the circumstances of these relationships and suggests some of their key conditions. By examining the relationship between Fair Trade organizations and corporate sellers, a number of underlying factors behind the dynamic continuation of such relationships are suggested, including: the existence of a pre-existing “hybrid logic”; the use of border discussions; shared tolerance of conflict; and creating common rules together. These four elements are supported by a fifth mediating factor, namely the existence and use of a fair trade certification system in the partnership. The latter appears as a central tool that promotes inter-logical relations – it can be seen as a “boundary object” that contains a series of narratives and discourses that are open to multiple interpretations according to the dominant institutional logic of each partner organization.
