A gritty, old-school firehouse in Boston is a stark contrast to Cassie’s old job. Hazing, a lack of funding and poor conditions mean firefighters are less than thrilled to have a competent and intelligent “lady” on the crew like Cassidy. Except for Handsome, who doesn’t mind having Cassie around. But he can’t think about it. Because he does not love. And because of the advice he gave his old captain: don’t talk to the firemen. Cassie feels her resolve slipping…but will she risk her place in the career she’s worked so hard to be taken seriously?

Book Of The Month May 2022 Selection Time!

Kathryn Center’s Things That Keep the Fire is a heartfelt, moving novel about the true meaning of life, love, and courage.

It excites us and it pains us. It controls our thoughts, it destroys our lives, and it is what we live for. But we almost never talk about it. And desire as a buried force in our lives has remained unexplored until now. Over the past eight years, journalist Lisa Taddeo has traveled the country six times, interacting with ordinary women from different regions and backgrounds. As a result, Three Women is a portrait of the most profound non-fiction desire and one of the most anticipated books of the year.

We begin with Lina, a housewife and mother of two in suburban Indiana whose marriage has lost its passion after ten years. She complains that “the sensation is offensive” and spends her days cooking and cleaning for a man who refuses to kiss her on the lips. To Lina’s dismay, her marriage counselor also says her husband’s position is correct. Starved for love, Lina begins to panic every day. When he reconnects with an old flame through social media, he quickly becomes involved in a task that will require everything.

Set in North Dakota, we meet Maggie, a seventeen-year-old high school student who finds a confidant in her beautiful, married English teacher. By Maggie’s account, late-night texts and phone calls turn into a secret physical relationship, and she skips school on her eighteenth birthday and plans to make love all day; instead, he breaks up with her on her thirtieth birthday. Years later, Maggie has no degree, no career, and no dreams to live by. When she learns the man has been named North Dakota’s teacher of the year, she steps forward with her story—and her former classmates and jury are incredulous. The judgment turns their peaceful community upside down.

Gef Book Of The Month: ‘together’

Finally, in an exclusive northeastern enclave, we meet Sloane—a handsome, successful, clean restaurant owner—happily married to a man who likes to watch her have sex with other men and women. He chooses partners for singles or threesomes and he makes sure everyone’s needs are met. Over the years, Sloane has asked herself where her husband’s desire ends and hers begins. One day, they invite a new man into their bed, but he brings with him a secret that ultimately forces Sloane to confront the power dynamics that fuel their lifestyle.

Based on years of reporting and told with stunning clarity and immediacy, Three Women is a groundbreaking portrait of erotic longing in contemporary America, revealing the fragility, complexity, and inequality of female desire with unprecedented depth and emotional power. Both the bravery of journalism and the triumph of nuanced and empathetic storytelling, it introduces us to three unforgettable women and one extraordinary writer, whose experiences remind us that we are not alone.

Smart and juicy, it’s a compulsive read about a formerly happy group of friends and parents whose competitiveness is nearly destroyed when an exclusive school for gifted children opens in the community.
