Qatar Airways Boeing 777 Business Class

During the COVID-19 crisis, our team has temporarily stopped conducting review trips and we are not publishing new flight or hotel reviews. Bringing our readers unbiased, detailed reviews of travel experiences is one of our core missions, and now is not the time. We all love to travel and you know it too. So, to help entertain you – and maybe even inspire you – we’re republishing a selection of our most popular reviews from 2019 to 2020, including the one below. Hope this helps you when we’re all ready to book trips again.

Qatar Airways Review (doha To Shanghai Pudong, Business Class)

[tpg_rating ticket-class=”business” tpg-rating-score=”89″ ground-experience=”17″ cabin-seat=”30″ amens-ife=”13″ food-bev=”16″ service=”13 ” pros=”Incredible privacy, on-demand dining, fast Wi-Fi, large inflight entertainment selection, responsive service.” cons=”Crowded lounge, inconsistent airplane food.” /]

In the summer of 2017, Qatar Airways unveiled its brilliant new Qsuite, bringing a true suite product – complete with a sliding door – into the business class cabin. A few days later I was able to board the first flight and have flown Qsuite several times since then, including my longest Qatar flight from Doha to New York-JFK.

Had there been award availability, I could have redeemed 70,000 AAdvantage miles to book the Qsuite between Doha (DOH) and New York-JFK. There were no open awards on the date I wanted, but I found a great fare from Cape Town (CPT) to Montreal (YUL) with a connection in Doha and JFK, where I was attending the South Africa PeaceJam conference.

Net spend of 10, 265 Membership Rewards points we earned with the Platinum Card® from American Express ($695 annual fee. See Rates & Fees), a $205 value.

Flight Report: Mnl Doh On Qatar Airways Flight Qr 929 (04 June 2022)

Based on TPG’s latest valuation, I earned 18,675 redeemable miles between the two segments, worth about $260. Starting with American Award Elite qualifying dollars for partner flights based on distance, I earned a total of $2,830 EQDs — about 1,000 more than I would have earned if AA had operated the flight.

This one-way trip actually put me over the $3,000 EQD requirement for AAdvantage Gold — though I’ll be thousands of miles away from qualifying in 2019.

Since I started my journey in Cape Town, my Qsuite experience started in the transit area of Doha. After stopping at the transit desk, I continued to the security checkpoint to see if I could change to an earlier flight to New York on Qatar’s A350-1000 – no despite plenty of open seats.

The transit area was very busy. It might be midnight, but it was a busy time at DOH.

From there, I wandered behind Doha’s 23-foot-tall “Lamp Bear,” a very popular photo stop, even for a few years.

Airport sports restaurants, plenty of shopping, computer workstations, children’s playrooms, high-end business and first-class lounges – it wasn’t.

If you manage to secure a room at the Transit Hotel, a place to rest for eight hours a night. I had something else in mind for this visit.

My first stop was Qatar’s Al Mourjan Business Lounge, accessible to Business and First Class flyers traveling on Qatar and other Oneworld carriers.

It’s huge and still had plenty of open seating, but I’ve never seen it this crowded.

Fortunately, there were two large dining areas to choose from, and a sandwich shop was starting on the main level.

There, guests can order a variety of quick-service gourmet treats that are delivered to their seats by service staff.

Qatar Airways To Launch ‘super Business Class’ Suite In March

One of the most iconic features I’ve ever seen in an airport lounge was the giant spiral staircase that was hard to miss.

Qatar used to offer a la carte dining upstairs, although that has been replaced by a hot and cold buffet.

The staff seemed to be struggling to keep up with the influx of guests. Many dishes were missing from either side of the buffet, but there was still plenty to choose from.

The designated nap area (below) was completely full but the game room was completely empty. There was also a 40 minute wait for a shower, so I decided to wait for a shower in the first class lounge.

As I prepared to leave, I saw an almost completely deserted area to the right of the main check-in desk.

There were many open semi-private chaise lounges. If I want a place to snooze this might be a decent option.

There was also free Wi-Fi throughout the lounge. Although I don’t plan on downloading dozens of TV episodes or anything like that, it was pretty fast.

After exploring the biz lounge for a few more minutes, I made my way to the Al Safwa First lounge, which recently started accepting paid business class flyers. At the time of this review, business travelers could spend up to six hours in the lounge for 600 Qatari riyals (about $165), or 650 riyals ($180) with a 15-minute express massage. Since First Class lounge access is not an included perk, I left it out of this review, but you can read about that experience here .

Review: Qatar Airways Business Class (777 300er)

After just over six hours in the lounge – and the staff never approached to ask me to leave – I began my journey to the gate.

Notably, US-bound passengers must go through a second security checkpoint just before the gate, adding about 10 minutes to the process.

Shortly after the scheduled boarding time, a gate agent announced a delay. It was over in about 20 minutes, but some passengers were clearly thrilled that there were no bathrooms after the second security screening.

I was in the small aft cabin, just 18 suites, many of which went empty.

Staggered suites: odd-numbered suites are rear-facing and closer together, making it ideal for passengers to travel together (although a center partition is available).

Since the Qsuite has full-length sliding doors, privacy is great regardless of where you sit, although I still prefer sitting against the window for better views during takeoff and landing.

The door was locked until he left, but it slid completely open. There was no gap like you find in Delta.

Inside, the suite was very spacious with decent storage. I ended up keeping my gadgets on the small shelf below the side table, which enabled direct access to the power outlet and USB port.

The only secure storage was on the side of the seat. That’s where I found my headphones and water bottle.

There was also plenty of overhead bin storage. Unlike the high-ceilinged Airbus A350, Qatar has installed center bins on the 777-300ER.

The sliding door really made a big difference and the hallway traffic didn’t bother me at all.

Perhaps the most exciting thing is that Qatar decided to install overhead air vents, making it easier to stay cool in a hot cabin.

The seat-toilet ratio was also decent. With so many open seats, there were less than 40 passengers for the four lavatories, meaning I never had to wait. I was surprised to see that they were not kept clean throughout our trip.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Qatar offered special amenity kits in October.

Qatar Airways’ Business Class Experience During The Pandemic

You may have noticed that some essentials are missing from the photo, but don’t worry: toothbrushes and shaving sets are available at Lav.

You can control the 21-inch inflight-entertainment system from the main display or via a wired touchscreen remote.

The screen was particularly reflective, making it difficult to make out dark content in a bright cabin.

There was plenty of content to choose from, including over 250 movies and over 100 TV shows.

There was also a strong selection of recent hits. Anyone who doesn’t regularly travel on long-haul flights should find something new to see.

However, the display quality wasn’t amazing. The image was dark, and the reflective coating didn’t help. No matter what I was watching, a subtle but annoying hissing sound was coming through my headphones.

Qatar offered its latest Wi-Fi on this particular flight, including one free hour, with a full-flight option available for $10.
