If there’s one thing I did last year, it was shop. To say I shop for a living is basically an understatement. There were days where I spent more time scrolling through Nordstrom’s site than Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook combined. And while I found some absolute problems (a $7,000 coat with a blanket attached comes to mind), I also had the opportunity to try out some incredible brands that are totally shaking up the plus-size market. For so long, plus-size brands have had, truth be told, absolutely atrocious outfits. Finally, 2021 saw gorgeous plus-size pieces, from wear-everywhere jeans to statement coats to comfy sweaters.

After going through everything in my closet, I picked out the best plus-size brands and lines of the year. Whether they just came out this year or have consistently delivered this year, these brands have completely got plus-size fashion figured out. After trying on and reviewing dozens of clothing items this year, here are the brands that get our seal of approval.

As much as I love brands that cater to all sizes, there’s something cute and comforting about a brand wholly dedicated to helping the plus-size market. Straight women have hundreds of brands just for them; I’d say it’s time for plus-size women to have the same opportunity. Since its launch in 2014, Eloquii has consistently provided plus-size women with workwear, eveningwear, swimwear, and casualwear that fit like a dream in sizes 14 to 28.

When I was making this list, I thought about all the places I shopped this year, and when I initially thought about Forever21, I wasn’t sure. Then, I went into my closet and looked at everything I’ve bought from there this year (and it’s been a lot). While I sometimes don’t have extraordinary luck with their bottoms, I find F21 has the best selection of tops to date at an affordable price point, hands down. If I have a date, special event or any kind of fun, night out coming up, I almost always run to the F21 first. While it’s definitely fast fashion, trendy pieces still linger in my closet for a while; I still have a freshman leotard and I’d be lying if I said that sometimes I still don’t wear it.

We’ve been waiting for Abercrombie to expand sizes for years, so when they launched the jeans up to size 37, we tried them on immediately. The star of Abercrombie’s plus-size offerings is their jeans, but they now also offer up to XXXL in many items and XXL in most.

This brand had always been on my wish list and I finally tried it in 2019. To no one’s surprise, I became completely obsessed with it. Their leggings are made from a fabric I can’t even describe; it is thin, but never seems transparent. They’re great for working out, just lounging around the house, or running errands. Their size range goes up to 6x, something other sportswear brands should get to soon. Not to mention the environmental sustainability model their brand has established makes it a little easier to spend a little more on my favorite leggings and sports bra combos; I can say that I am investing my money for both a good product and a good brand.

ASOS has long been a staple for plus-size women. From their in-house ASOS Design collection to Boohoo, Missguided, River Island and other UK based brands, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for if you just peruse the deals at ASOS. As well as clothing (I love ASOS for their coats and all-occasion dresses!), they also have accessories for plus-size women (like belts and necklaces with longer chains), as well as lingerie, pajamas, and loose-fitting shoes and boots. Whenever someone tells me they’re looking for a specific item, I send it to ASOS.

Good American has been on my “favorite plus size brands” list for quite a while (their jeans are tres magnifique!), but they stay there all the time because they’re constantly adding on-trend, basics to their collection, all in the same inclusive sizing that has made their brand a staple for plus-size women. If you’re looking to add a quality pair of jeans to your collection, look no further. My GA jeans are my absolute favorite, and it’s a purchase I’d gladly make again.

Although I was frustrated to find that Madewell doesn’t have their plus size in store, I loved everything they offered online. Nearly everything in their line comes in plus sizes, and it’s the same cute, hip Madewell that everyone knows and loves. Their items are pretty much universally flattering, and I find they actually run a little large, meaning that as a typical size 18, I generally wear an XXL (which is sometimes sold in stores!).

Rihanna. kills. it. Everything is fine. weather. And Savage X Fenty is no exception. Since I’ve tried SavageX’s lingerie, I don’t think I’ll shop pretty much anywhere else. Bras and underwear run true to size, with sizes ranging from 32A to 46H and XS to 3X. Everything is cute, comfortable and sexy. Along with bras and underwear, SavageX offers a variety of nightwear and sleepwear in the exact same range of sizes.

Old Navy blew our minds when they finally became one of the few stores to stop separating plus size and straight, now offering up to size 28 in stores and size 30 online, all in the same place you can buy straight sizes . Old Navy will also have a size 12 and 18 mannequin in stores to make shopping easier when you’re wearing more than a size 2 (which is most of us). We love Old Navy for jeans, activewear, lounge, casual wear, and more.

One of the most common complaints I get when posting a fashion article is that I don’t focus enough on plus-size clothes for women our age. Typical comments include things like, and, I’m paraphrasing here, “I applaud these women for their boldness, but, frankly, I don’t have a 28 inch waist. How about showing us some plus size women?”

Frankly, I don’t disagree with these comments. I’m not a super thin woman. Like many women in our community, I try to keep fit, but I’m still rounded in all the usual places. No, the problem isn’t that I’m avoiding featuring older styles and plus sizes. The problem is, I can’t find any!

In a way, this is symptomatic of a larger problem that I’d like your help solving. When it comes to fashion, youth and thinness are still the most desirable traits. As a result, older women with rounded bodies feel doubly rejected.

The good news is that designers are starting to recognize the opportunity that plus-size women present. For example, H&M has a plus-size range, although it doesn’t specifically target older women.

The bad news is that this change isn’t happening fast enough. This slow shift is somewhat disconcerting when you consider the fact that, according to MassMutual Financial Group, female Boomers control ¾ of the wealth in the United States.
