Weird News Story Of The Day – LONG BRANCH, N.J., Feb. 22 – Mrs. Sarah L. Robertson, who last Saturday night reported to the police that a dinner party was held at her bungalow and jewelry worth $50,000 was taken from her, was arrested today, accused of conspiracy to cause the arrest.
A few hours earlier, the robbery had been flagged as a “hoax” by a young man named John Bailey who told the police he had been hired by Mrs/Robertson to enter the bungalow and pretend to steal the jewellery. In fact, he said, he got nothing but a bag full of tissue paper. He said Mrs. Robertson paid him $1000 to stage the wait.

A Silverlake couple was found dead Sunday night under strange circumstances that police say may tie the crime to the slayings of actress Sharon Tate and four others at Benedict Mall.

Detectives said the man’s head was covered in a white hood, his chest pierced with a meat fork that was apparently used to cut the word “war” and “XXX” into the meat. His body was found on the living room floor.
The woman’s body, clad in pajamas, was found in the bedroom of the detached single-story home at 3306 Waverly Drive, her back torn to shreds by what police said may have been a knife or whip.
The words “death to pigs” were smeared on the refrigerator door, apparently by the killer’s hand, dipped in the blood of his victims.
The couple’s teenage children returned home shortly after the crime was discovered at 10:30 p.m. He immediately became hysterical and could not give the police a clear account of events earlier in the evening.

The hood, the bloody inscription – written in the same way as the word “pig” on the front door of Miss Tate’s rented house in Benedict Canyon – and the nature of the wounds all pointed to a connection to the earlier crime, the police said. Miss Tate and her four friends were killed late Friday night or Saturday morning.
The second suspect is a man whose name was mentioned by William A. Garrettson, a 19-year-old caretaker at the estate who was taken into custody shortly after the murders were discovered.
Garrettson took a one-hour polygraph test at Central Police Headquarters on Sunday afternoon. He was then returned to his cell, and Sgt. Jesse Buckles explained that homicide detectives were “not entirely satisfied” with his answers to their questions.
Earlier, officers indicated that Gertson could be released after taking a polygraph test. Buckles said Gertson may still be released — but not until further investigation is completed, likely sometime today.

Lt. Det. Robert Helder said at a press conference that efforts to track down the killer – or killers – have been centered on acquaintances of the short, slim handler.
But Garrettson’s lawyer, Barry Tarlow, argued that it was more likely that the killer was someone related to the murder victims themselves.
“There was a party at the house the night of the murders,” Tarlow said. “From the investigation done by my office, our best guess is that whoever did this was personally involved with these people who were killed.”
What police originally thought was their best lead in the case evaporated late on Sunday when Miss Tate’s red Ferrari was found at a service garage in Hollywood, where it had been taken for repairs last week. The car was reported missing, and was the subject of a bulletin from all points.
