The first time I learned the meaning of tattoo art was in the mid-2000s, on TLC’s “L.A. Color.” It was one of the first realities to portray the world of tattooing—initiating many of its forms—and it offered me a glimpse into a world that felt distant in both time and culture. Tattoos weren’t as ubiquitous or acceptable back then. At the start of the show, on August 7, 2007, I was not legally allowed to even think about getting my color.

Still, these were the episodes I was waiting for: where tears were shed by a real-life character on screen. Where a customer would come in with a photo held tightly to their chest, the sound stops in such a way that it happens when someone is about to share something deeply personal. Sometimes the photos were old and classic, with a dead lover with tight hair and full makeup. Other times, it was a candid shot of someone’s very much alive mother, radiating warmth. There were images of idolatrous figures. Children you know are missing – their grieving parents want to remember a life that was cut short.
It was more than just pictures. And at this point, tattoo artists were more than just tattooers.
They witnessed sorrow, joy, anticipation. They were inquisitive, getting answers to important questions like what does this person in the picture mean to you? How did they live? What is their legacy? What are your fondest memories with them? Why—of all the ways to honor someone—do you permanently engrave their face on your body? They did all of this while coloring in the skin, while shading the subject’s eyes to make them shine like they did in real life, while making sure the sides of the mouth Your smile line is curved like this.
Watching this event seem like equal parts magic and voyeurism—an exchange of energy that rarely happens between lovers, let alone an artist and their canvas, playing out on screen. With Portrait Episodes, it was always about more than just tattooing. It was about love. Keeping a place for it, displaying it and finally keeping it on the skin forever. It was different from watching a living artist create a picture on folded cloth, or a sculptor creating a portrait of someone out of clay. It was very personal, very high stakes.

In the shadows, Hurtado nods as Mark picks up his son’s story. “His suffering made him a stronger person,” Mark said. With more than a million Instagram followers, worldwide fame and many celebrity clients to count, Hurtado says these are still the most meaningful portrait tattoos he does: the ones for people’s grieving process. It feels necessary. “I’ve seen people tattoo their children’s hands and call them close—as if they’re holding their child,” he says. “These are the most important tattoos I make.”
When Nipsey Hustle died, LA mourned for what felt like an eternity. It’s still sad – mention his name in any conversation and you’ll feel the tension rise from people’s throats. It was only a few weeks after his death in 2019 that Hurtado sat through the game, the Compton rapper formerly known as Jason Terrell Taylor, and his Storm on his A tattoo of a deceased friend. “With that particular tattoo, all the [players] were saying [it], ‘Man, you know, Nipsey’s going bad so I’m going to sit here and wipe it out,'” Hurtado recalls. “I think a lot of people are dealing with trauma and pain through this. It’s something that’s treatable.”

“It’s crazy how a sports person or someone you admire can really inspire you and change the way you think and make you tougher.” Butcher says. “People connect to a particular organization and everything they’re about. It’s not just, ‘Oh, Kobe is great.’ It makes a little more sense.
It means, I think, putting someone’s face on your body that you know and that you have memories with. But what about when this memory and this understanding are one sided? Each portrait tattoo is different from the next – there are different styles and levels of detail. Black and gray, color. Reality, Illustrated. Small, big. Incentives can also vary. Not all portrait tattoos are memorials and they don’t always have a sad story with them. Often they can be proud of the people who are still here. You are warned not to tattoo your significant other’s name on your arm; But a face may be a more sincere profession of love.

Last year, artist Arlene Salinas tattooed Anna Gary Nguidanos’ grandmother Rosie Gary as a teenager.
Arlene Salinas can never forget the first picture she did. It was her brother, her first guinea pig, and it was their grandfather. Together they chose a picture: a picture that reflected the picture they saw when they closed their eyes and thought about it. “At first he kind of shook his head [in disapproval] — because, you know, my family’s Catholic Mexican,” remembers Salinas, a tattoo artist at Three Kings Tattoo in Highland Park. “But then he shed a little tear and hugged my brother. He was like, ‘But not anymore.’
Getting the face of someone you love on your body might seem like the most extreme way to show love — but after completing the warm, detailed black-and-gray portraits she’s known for, Salinas says it looks so natural. “Sometimes people really love something and they just want to respect the dirt out of it and put it on their body,” he says. “It’s just human nature to want to stand on top of a mountain and declare your love for something.”
How To Choose The Perfect Tattoo
Tattoo artists say drawing as an exercise is unique from other forms of tattooing—not necessarily more difficult, just different. Everything depends on the level of time, the specialty of the skill and the inner workings of the heart and mind of their clients. Salinas can depend on the details, taking up to three hours to carve a true black and gray piece. Hurtado’s works take four to eight hours and Boucher can spend four to 12 hours on his paintings.
