Today I’m sharing my journey with the autoimmune conditions psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, including what’s worked for me and how I’ve adjusted my life since being diagnosed.

Although I had always grown up with my mom having psoriasis and listening to her talk about her struggle, I really had no idea what my life would be like dealing with an autoimmune disease.

How To Tell Psoriasis Apart From Other Skin Conditions

It has been 13 years since I experienced my first psoriasis outbreak. My journey has been very different from my mother’s, but I also see so many similarities. He had it in his scalp and all over his body, and I was looking at him the whole time and I remember him going to the tanning bed to try and get it lightened up. Getting UV rays directly on the spots really helped my mom. For me, however, that medicine would burn the areas and cause itchiness, so I always felt helpless. I am the only child to whom my mother passed her autoimmune issue. Lucky me, lol.

When I was 25, I had my first outbreak of psoriasis. I got a common cold and since psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, that triggered it. It was all over my stomach and legs. Fortunately, in my apartment complex at the time, my neighbor was a dermatologist. I showed it to him and he said to come into the office and he would give me a cortisone shot and then hopefully it would go away (since it was my first big outbreak). I did this and my psoriasis was completely gone for about five years.

At the time, I wasn’t sure it was psoriasis. I lived in New York – I’ll never forget it, because our DASH store opened in November. I wore this sparkly sequined dress from our store to the opening and then I came home and itched. It seemed to come out of nowhere, but I thought my skin was just sensitive to the material of the dress, so I didn’t think too much of it. And then I came home to LA for Mason’s first birthday party and my mom looked at my leg and said it was definitely psoriasis.

This is when my real psoriasis journey began. For the past eight years, even though the spots are unpredictable, I can always count on my main spot on my right calf, which remains inflamed all the time. I’ve learned to live with this spot without using creams or drugs – I just deal with it. Sometimes I cover it up and sometimes I don’t. I don’t really mind that.

Psoriasis Vs. Seborrheic Dermatitis: Which Is It?

When I got pregnant both times, it completely disappeared. It was amazing, but then it came back again. At the beginning of this year it got extremely bad – it covered my entire face and most of my entire body.

One night, I woke up to use the bathroom and physically couldn’t pick up the phone. I thought it was weird, but maybe I was just weirdly sleeping on my hands and being so tired, I shouldn’t have been checking my phone at that hour anyway. I immediately fell asleep again.

I woke up that morning and still couldn’t pick up the phone. I was freaking out – I couldn’t even pick up a toothbrush, my hands hurt so much. I worked out the day before and we did an arm day so I thought maybe one of the exercises had strained my arm. It didn’t occur to me that it could be anything serious. As the day went on, I had a little more movement in my arms, but they really hurt inside – I could feel it in my bones. Everyone assumed it was just my training, but I knew this felt different.

I let two days go by and remembered I had to go to Vegas for Jimmy Kimmel. I was so uncomfortable the whole time because my hands hurt so much. I felt miserable.

After flying home, I went to the doctor because at the time I thought I might have rheumatoid arthritis. I knew I was feeling pain in my bones, and after I googled the possibilities, I was very scared.

I had my blood tested for all the possibilities and it came back positive for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. I immediately started crying and felt so lost. You can really get into a crazy headspace when you think you’ve got something. My doctor said I might have a false positive, and he wanted me to come back.

I went back three days later, which felt like the longest three days of my life! Turns out those tests were false positives and I didn’t have rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. I had psoriatic arthritis. It is similar to the arthritis that can result from psoriasis and can come and go. It’s still painful and scary, but I was happy to have a diagnosis. No matter what autoimmune condition I had, I had to get through it, and they are all manageable with proper care.

I did so much research. I realized that so many people I know suffer from lupus and psoriatic arthritis, and they gave me great advice.

Before the arthritis set in, I spent about four months doing everything natural – every ointment, cream, serum and foam you can imagine and everything from the dermatologist. I even tried tar flavored herbal tea. I tried celery juice for eight weeks. Then I would make celery juice mixed with the tea. I would do it twice a day. I was just exhausted from everything. I changed my diet to plant-based (which I still follow).

I received daily packs from everyone claiming their cream would be my cure. Even packages from Israel! I also got a light machine in the house that I started using. So I did the light treatments plus the creams and the tea. I just couldn’t take it anymore, and physically I couldn’t move my arms. I remember I had a press day for my Carolina Lemke sunglasses and I was wearing these purple snake print boots and pants and I couldn’t pull my pants down to go to the bathroom. That day I couldn’t even take off my bra and had to have someone put it on me because the pain was so unbearable. With the boots I was wearing, my ankles were starting to feel it in those joints. I knew then that it wasn’t just a problem in my hands, it was a bone problem.

I have become extremely comfortable with my psoriasis. No matter where it is on my body, sometimes it feels good to show it off, and other times I don’t want it to be a distraction, so I cover it up with body makeup.

I live a healthy life and try to eat as much plant based as possible and drink seaweed smoothies. With all the stress in life, I try to make sure I take time for myself to be focused and keep my stress to a minimum.

I hope my story can help anyone else with an autoimmune disease feel reassured that there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can develop psoriasis in your nose, but this is not common. When psoriasis affects the nose, it is usually on the outside. If you think you may have nasal psoriasis, see a doctor for tests to rule out other more likely conditions.

According to the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance (PAPAA), it is possible, but very rare, for someone to get psoriasis on the nose.

On lighter skin, psoriasis lesions that appear on the nose are usually white or gray. In medium skin tones, they can appear salmon-colored with a silver-white scale. In darker skin tones, psoriasis may appear purple with a gray scale. It can also appear dark brown and hard to see.

Topical steroids for the treatment of moist areas. Since this is a sensitive area, always consult your doctor before using any topical creams on your nose.

In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved two new topical creams to treat psoriasis: tapinarof (Vtama) and roflumilast (Zorive).
